What is teeth whitening

What is teeth whitening?

To put it simply, teeth whitening uses chemicals to eliminate stains. Professional treatment results are obvious and can be seen quickly. Whilst teeth whitening is safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. Dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease must be resolved before the patient can receive a whitening treatment. If you have extremely sensitive teeth, teeth whitening can also cause further discomfort.

Before deciding on teeth whitening, your dentist will examine your teeth for any issues to ensure a safe and effective treatment.

What causes tooth discolouration?

Tooth discolouration can be caused by various factors such as diet, hygiene and age. Common foods that can cause staining over time include:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Red Wine
  • Dark Soda
  • Dark Berries

Smoking can also cause dark stains on the outer layer of the tooth. However, these stains can be easily removed through whitening treatments and proper oral hygiene. Whereas intrinsic staining is discolouration that occurs inside the tooth and cannot be easily bleached. Your dentist will examine your teeth to determine the type of staining and recommend the best whitening method for you. At Home Whitening

There are many over the counter whitening products that you can purchase. These include whitening toothpastes, mouth rinses and bleaching strips. However, the results from these treatments are not immediate, and may take months before you see any difference. If you have darker stains on your teeth, a whitening toothpaste will not result in a drastic change.

Your dentist can also prescribe you with at home treatments that are made with custom trays. You can purchase professional grade whitening solutions and provide treatment to yourself in the privacy of your home. Whilst these at home treatments will be more effective than over the counter products, it can still take weeks or months until you notice any difference

At home treatments will require repeated application and have a higher risk of increasing the sensitivity of your teeth. It’s important you follow the instructions of the treatment and seek advice from your dentist to ensure safe application.

If you’re seeking more efficient whitening results, professional treatments will be more suitable for you. Your dentist will evaluate your teeth for signs of disease before applying a 37.5% hydrogen peroxide bleaching gel and a bleaching light.

Whitening material at this level is not safe for at home use and can only be applied by a qualified professional. Our principal dentist, Dr Nikgoo, will carefully apply the gel, avoiding your gum tissue to reduce tooth sensitivity. The treatment will take approximately 50 minutes and is far more effective compared to at home treatments.
