What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the teeth located at the back of the mouth that will typically come through the gums around age 17. There are normally four wisdom teeth, two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw, but some people may have less, or even none at all.

Some wisdom teeth grow through without causing issues, but others may erupt at an angle and press into the gum or neighbouring tooth. This can lead to significant pain, swelling, and even infection, especially because wisdom teeth are difficult to clean. When food and bacteria become trapped, problems can worsen quickly without professional care.

Do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth require removal. If there is no pain, infection, or damage to surrounding teeth, extraction may not be necessary. During your consultation, your dentist will assess your oral health and determine whether Wisdom Teeth Removal is the best option for you.

Removal is needed if the wisdom teeth has caused:

  • Cavities
  • Infections
  • Cysts
  • Swollen gums

If left untreated, these issues can impact your overall oral health and may lead to further treatments such as root canal therapy or dental restorations.

For many people, there’s not enough room in the mouth to accommodate for their wisdom teeth, which is why they experience pain. Wisdom teeth removal will eliminate the pain permanently and will help to maintain overall oral health. It’s best to ask your dentist to inspect your wisdom teeth before they come through. An x-ray scan will indicate whether your wisdom teeth will cause any problems, and can save you from unnecessary pain in the future.

What happens during a wisdom teeth removal?

If you do require wisdom teeth removal, you will be administered a local or general anaesthetic. At Pain Free Dental Clinic, we aim to accommodate our patients as best we can and can provide pain relief methods such as nitrous oxide and conscious sedation (sleep dentistry).

As wisdom teeth are large, the gums may require stitching after the extraction to help you heal faster. It’s normal for your jaw and gums to be sore and swollen for the first few days. It’s recommended that you eat soft, easy to chew food after the extraction, and avoid smoking and alcohol. We can also prescribe you with painkillers to soothe any discomfort.

How to soothe wisdom teeth pain?

Ice packs and painkillers can provide some relief for wisdom teeth pain. High strength mouthwashes such as Savacol, as well as proper brushing and flossing technique is needed to prevent wisdom teeth infections. There are also pain numbing gels that can be applied onto the gums, or rinse your mouth with a cup of warm water and a teaspoon of salt for temporary pain relief.

If you suspect your wisdom teeth are coming through, don’t ignore the pain. Early intervention can help prevent infection and complications. Visit the team at Pain Free Dental Clinic for a routine dental check-up or learn more about long-term solutions such as Wisdom Teeth Removal.
